That’s not sand…it’s a picnic table!
Sitting on a dilapidated blue picnic table in Gimli, without my camera, I pulled out my relatively new iPhone 6 and started taking photos to capture the view at Gimli Beach.
Keep in mind at the time, phone cameras lacked the usual optical advantages of digital SLRs, such as depth and focal length, but limitations can be fun, right?
That tiny little lens was able to focus on the weathered textures of the picnic table, creating an unexpected depth of field that blurred the background into a soft, indistinct haze. The table’s surface, with its peeling paint and grooves filled with the remnants of summer gatherings, suddenly took on the appearance of a vast, arid landscape.
I was reminded of this cliché photography quote:
The best camera is the one that you have with you.
